Description

Mugwort is a tall herbaceous perennial native to temperate Eurasia and naturalized in North America. It can grow up to 5 feet tall and has pointed, feathered leaves with white, downy undersides. Mugwort has a long and winding history of culinary, medicinal and psychotropic (consciousness altering) use throughout the world. It has been used by Traditional Chinese Medicine for a variety of health issues and by medieval European herbalists for its protective abilities.

The leaves and flowers are collected and dried just before the plant blooms, when its concentration of volatile oils is at its peak. Mugwort has been traditionally used to treat gastric complaints due to its ability as a bitter herb to stimulate bile flow and digestion. It also possesses anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and mild-antiparasitic properties and has been used in folk medicine as a gentler dewormer than the related species wormwood, Artemisia absinthium.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine this herb is also used to stimulate irregular or suppressed menstruations and for uterine pain and cramps. Care must be taken to avoid Mugwort during pregnancy as its uterine-stimulating properties can potentially cause a miscarriage.

It is said to also have mild sedative and relaxing properties, leading to it being a common herbal smoke and a good way to promote sleep. In fact, it has traditionally been used as a “dreaming herb”. Mugwort has an intense effect on both the vividness of dreams and the dreamer’s ability to remember them after waking. If you are already an avid dreamer, mugwort can propel your dreaming mind into lucidity, helping you becoming aware that you are dreaming. Mugwort has traditionally been used both in teas and in pillows or satchels to aid in dream induction.

Our Mugwort includes all aerial parts; leaf, stem and flower buds and is wildcrafted from the Czech Republic.

Mugwort is not intended for long term use. Do not use mugwort for longer than 1 week. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as it can stimulate contractions of the uterus and cause abortions. If you are allergic to ragweed, mugwort may cause a similar reaction.
