Description

Marshmallow is an herbaceous perennial that grows in marshes, along riverbanks, and in other damp areas around the world. Native to much of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa it has become naturalized in marshy areas in North America and Australia as well. Its generic name Althaea comes from the Greek word meaning “to heal” and refers to a long tradition of using Marshmallow for its healing properties. At one time it was also used as the base for the sweet confectionery marshmallow snack although this is no longer the case.

The use of the marshmallow plant dates back to at least 2000 years ago, being well recorded by the ancient Egyptians, Indians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese. In fact, Traditional Chinese Medicine considers marshmallow is a yin tonic that is used for signs of deficient heat in the body.
